Fever in a neutropenic patient is considered a medical emergency unless the patient is known to be low risk. This issue is discussed separately. (See "Overview of neutropenic fever syndromes" .) Based on these findings, a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma was made. We believe that the mild pancytopenia that the patient exhibited was likely attributable to hepatitis C infection.
