However, since 1945, land allocated to orchards has decreased from 80,000 hectares to just 20,000 hectares. This has also worsened in recent years, with more than 10% of all British orchards being lost in the past 5 years alone. WebTraditional orchards are normally planted with trees on standard rootstocks. These will live for much longer than dwarfing or semi-standard trees so provide habitat continuity and develop veteran features crucial to orchard biodiversity.
