Web1 May 2015 · Racing shocks all use hydraulic fluid in a tube with a piston. The piston pushes the fluid through a series of valves, and bleeds, controlling the “rate” of the shock. The valves and bleeds can be varied to change the rate. Different valves and bleeds are used for rebound and compression.
