WebWernicke’s encephalopathy develops if a person’s brain doesn’t get enough thiamine (vitamin B1). This is almost always caused by a person drinking too much alcohol. Alcohol prevents thiamine from being absorbed properly in the gut, stops it from being used properly in the body, and increases the amount of thiamine that the body loses in the urine. WebThiamine (also known as vitamin B1) increases the amount of vitamin B1 in your body. Before you start Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. How should you take it? Take thiamine regularly as directed with a glass of water. What if you forget a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as possible.
